7 Day Dog Training Plan: Build Trust and Good Habits Fast
7 Day Dog Training Plan: A Loving Guide to Build Trust and Good Habits
When I first decided to train my dog, Bella, I felt both excited and nervous. She was sweet and full of energy, but also stubborn, easily distracted, and loved chewing on everything. I wanted to help her become calm, confident, and well-behavedโwithout losing her joyful spirit. Thatโs when I created a simple 7-day dog training plan that focused on patience, bonding, and positive reinforcement. The results amazed meโnot just in her behavior, but in the trust we built together.
This 7-day plan isnโt about perfection. Itโs about progress, connection, and communication. Whether you have a new puppy or an older dog, each day focuses on one key skill that will help you strengthen your bond while laying the foundation for lifelong good habits.

Day 1: Build Trust and Connection
Before any training can begin, your dog needs to trust you. Spend this day simply being togetherโplay gently, speak softly, and use their name often. I spent most of the first day sitting on the floor with Bella, letting her come to me on her own terms. Treats helped, but it was the calm tone of my voice and gentle gestures that made her feel safe.
Establish a positive connection. Dogs learn best when they feel loved and secure. End the day with praise, cuddles, or quiet time togetherโit sets the tone for the week ahead.

Day 2: Master โSitโ and Eye Contact
โSitโ is one of the most basic commands, but itโs also one of the most powerful. It teaches your dog self-control and focus. Use a treat to guide their nose upwardโwhen their bottom touches the ground, say โSitโ and reward them immediately. Practice in short, frequent sessions throughout the day.
At the same time, encourage eye contact. Hold a treat near your eyes and say, โLook.โ Reward them when they meet your gaze. That moment of connection is where true communication beginsโitโs your dog saying, โIโm listening.โ

Day 3: Learn โStayโ and Patience
Once your dog understands โSit,โ itโs time to add โStay.โ This command helps them develop impulse control. Ask your dog to sit, then open your palm and say โStay.โ Take one step backโif they hold position, praise and reward them. Gradually increase the distance and duration over multiple tries. Be patientโthis one takes practice!
When Bella finally held her stay for a full 10 seconds, I nearly cried. It wasnโt just obedienceโit was trust, focus, and calmness coming together in one beautiful moment.
Day 4: Introduce โComeโ with Joy
The โComeโ command can literally save your dogโs life one day. Make it fun! Say your dogโs name followed by โCome!โ in a cheerful voice. When they reach you, reward them with a treat and tons of praise. The goal is for them to associate โComeโ with happiness and safety, not pressure or fear.
I made this a game with Bellaโtaking turns hiding behind furniture or calling her from another room. The excitement in her eyes every time she ran toward me made my heart melt.
Day 5: Practice Leash Manners
Walking calmly on a leash is one of the hardest skills for dogs to learn. Start indoors or in your yard. Hold the leash loosely and walk a few steps. If your dog pulls, stop immediately. When they return to your side, reward them and continue walking. It teaches them that staying close means more fun and freedom.
Remember to stay patientโdogs sense frustration. Calm energy leads to calm walking. Over time, your walks will become peaceful, not a tug-of-war.
Day 6: Add โLeave Itโ and โDrop Itโ
These commands are essential for keeping your dog safe. To teach โLeave it,โ hold a treat in your closed hand. When your dog stops trying to get it, say โYes!โ and give them a different treat from your other hand. For โDrop it,โ trade whatโs in their mouth for something better. Never yank or yellโmake it a game of trust and exchange.
Bella used to grab socks and run, thinking it was a chase game. Once she learned โDrop it,โ she proudly brought items to me, wagging her tail as if to say, โSee? I did good!โ
Day 7: Combine and Celebrate
By day seven, your dog will have learned several valuable commandsโand youโll have built an incredible bond. Use this day to review everything: Sit, Stay, Come, Leave it, and leash manners. Mix in playtime between sessions to keep things light and positive.
Most importantly, celebrate every small win. Training isnโt just about obedienceโitโs about trust, communication, and love. When Bella mastered her first full โStay and Comeโ sequence, I couldnโt stop smiling. The connection we shared was stronger than ever.
Final Thoughts: The Journey Never Ends
This 7-day dog training plan is just the beginning. Dogs, like us, thrive on consistency, kindness, and patience. The more time you spend teaching with love, the more your dog will reflect that calm, trusting energy back to you.
Training your dog isnโt about controlโitโs about teamwork. Itโs about learning to speak their language and showing them that they can rely on you. By the end of this week, youโll realize something beautiful: you didnโt just train your dogโyou grew together, heart to heart.
