Male vs Female Shih Tzu: What I Learned Owning Both
Temperament Differences
From my own experience, male Shih Tzus tend to be more cuddly and affectionate. My male Shih Tzu always wanted to be near me, following me from room to room like a little shadow. He loved constant attention and enjoyed being held, which made him feel like a tiny fluffy baby.
My female Shih Tzu, on the other hand, was loving but a bit more independent. She enjoyed cuddles, but only when *she* wanted them. She had a sassy, confident personality that made her feel like a tiny queen ruling the house with grace and charm.
Training and Behavior
When it came to training, I noticed my male Shih Tzu was very eager to please. He responded quickly to positive reinforcement and got excited about learning new tricks. However, he also got distracted easily because he loved playing so much.
My female Shih Tzu was more focused but also more stubborn. She understood commands very well but sometimes refused to follow them unless I bribed her with her favorite treat. Her smart but sassy attitude made training a fun challenge.

My female’s coat was silkier and easier to manage, but she hated anything touching her face. Grooming her bangs or cleaning tear stains took time and patience. Even though both coats are beautiful, their grooming needs can vary based on personality.
Affection and Attachment
My male Shih Tzu formed a deep emotional bond with me right away. He always wanted to be close, loved belly rubs, and constantly looked for reassurance. His clingy, sweet personality made him feel like the ultimate companion dog.
My female Shih Tzu was affectionate too, but in a more elegant way. She showed love by quietly sitting beside me rather than on top of me. She had a calm, soothing presence, which made every moment with her feel peaceful and precious.
Energy Levels
Male Shih Tzus tend to be more energetic. Mine loved zoomies around the house and got excited over every toy. Playtime was a big part of his day, and he always made me laugh with his goofy personality.
My female Shih Tzu had bursts of playfulness but generally preferred calm activities. She loved lounging on pillows, watching birds through the window, or simply relaxing next to me. Her gentle energy balanced out the chaos perfectly.
Socialization
My male Shih Tzu loved meeting new people and dogs. He wagged his tail at everyone and wanted to make friends wherever we went. His friendly nature made outings fun and stress-free.
The female, however, was more selective. She took time to warm up to new environments and preferred smaller, quieter social situations. Once comfortable, though, she showed her sweet and loyal side to everyone.
Which One Is Better?
Honestly, both male and female Shih Tzus are wonderful in their own ways. My male brought so much joy, silliness, and constant affection. He made every day feel bright and full of love.
My female brought elegance, calmness, and a soft, gentle companionship. She made the house feel peaceful and cozy. Choosing between a male vs female Shih Tzu really depends on your lifestyle and personality—they are both perfect in their own unique ways.
